Students in Years 7 and 8 follow a broad curriculum which seeks to build upon and extend the knowledge and skills developed at primary school.
The core subjects (English, Maths and Science) set by ability in Year 7; other subjects tend to be taught in mixed ability groups.
All students also do PE, Computing and ABC (Attitudes, Beliefs and Careers, a combination of RE and PSHCE). They study Technology subjects on a rotation basis, plus Art, Music, Drama and Dance.
September 2015 saw the re-introduction of separate History and Geography, following many years of an integrated Humanities course. We believe this will challenge our more able students more and prepare all students better for the new GCSE exams.
We have also introduced a second modern language for most students into Year 7, with students studying either German and French or German and Spanish. Some students study just one language, French, and spend the remaining two lessons improving their literacy skills.
We seek to personalise the curriculum as early as possible for all students to enable them to pursue their interests. After an introduction to all subjects when students start the school, the options process begins at Christmas of Year 8. Students receive extensive support for their choices, which includes a one-to-one interview with a member of the Senior Team for all students and their parents and carers.
The core curriculum of English, Maths, Science, PE and ABC continues throughout Key Stage 4 (through to the end of Year 11). Alongside this, students study four options leading to GCSE and BTEC qualifications at the end of Year 11.
The Foundation Learning Tier is offered to students who would find a full package of GCSEs daunting. This places extra emphasis on the core subjects of English, Maths and Science and provides a more vocational pathway for students in their options time.
Year 11 are on a different model, as we phase out an ambitious curriculum model introduced in 2011.
